There are many warning signs of dating abuse and they should always be taken seriously.

"Teens are experiencing their first romantic relationships, so it could be that aggressive relationships are skewing their view of what's normal and healthy and putting them on a trajectory for future victimization," said lead author Deinera Exner-Cortens, M. '10, a doctoral student in the field of human development in the College of Human Ecology.Healthy relationship behaviors can have a positive effect on a teen’s emotional development.Unhealthy, abusive, or violent relationships may contribute to negative consequences.The research was supported by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.As teens develop emotionally, they are heavily influenced by their relationship experiences.
